In 1792, a young apothecary apprentice named Edward Stabler came to Alexandria to establish his own business. He sold a variety of products, including medicine, surgical instruments, and dental equipment. His clients ranged from farmers to famous Alexandrians such as Martha Washington. Stabler’s apothecary was passed on to family members after his death and remained in business until 1933.

Today, visitors to the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum can walk through the restored 18th-century building and view an impressive collection of herbal botanicals, hand-blown glass, and medical equipment. The museum also houses journals, ledgers, and invoices that preserve an essential part of Alexandria’s history.

Old Town Farmer’s Market

A visit to the Old Town Farmer’s Market has been an Alexandrian tradition dating back to the days of George Washington. The future first president sold the produce he grew at Mount Vernon at the site of the present market. In addition to fresh local produce, meat, and cheese, you can also purchase handmade soap, potted plants, and art. The market hosts activities like face painting and arts and crafts.
