It’s difficult to travel due to government restrictions, and the way traveling has changed this past year. With activities that you can do traveling in your car, day road trips are a great way to get out of the house and have something fun to do with your family. If you live in or you’re near Fairfax, know that it’s already a great city to explore: but the surrounding areas are just as inviting and fun.
Mt. Vernon
Former home to George Washington, this estate has been well preserved by the efforts of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association. They even bought the land across the water from the estate within the Maryland Watershed so as not to have the view marred from the back porch where you’ll be able to sit and enjoy the breeze. This historic landmark has a farm, festivals, a tour of the house, and all other manners of activities that will keep you occupied for an entire day.
Go Ape Tree Top Adventure
Do you enjoy pretending you’re in a rainforest surrounded by apes? Would you like some adventures flying around the treetops? Look no further than this park in Rockville, MD. Just a quick jaunt from the city, this park will take you to new heights with ziplines, rope ladders, and Tarzan swings. Before you start on your adventure, you’ll be given a guided tour with 30-minutes of instruction, after which point you’re free to monkey around.
Washington, D.C.
If you already live in the area, you might have done this, but this is a fantastic day or multi-day trip that even those native to the area are still finding things to explore. Explore such hidden gems as the Rock Creek Park Horse Center, Hillwood Estate Museum and Gardens, the Spanish Steps, Lincoln’s Cottage, and Dumbarton Oaks, to name a few. Step out of the popular tourist sites and into the less known culture and history that D.C. offers.
Virginia Safari Park
This little park in Natural Bridge, VA, is a quick ride and fun for the entire family. Considered two zoos in one fun bundle, it has a petting zoo and interactive habitats. There are many animals to pet, including llamas, zebras, deer, and camels, and there are others that you’ll be able to see but not touch. Just be aware when dealing with food and wild animals that they are wild animals and deserve respect regardless of how friendly they may be.
Baltimore, MD
If you’ve seen enough of D.C., then you might want to check out Maryland’s side of the beltway with Baltimore. A two-hour drive from town will have you where there are options such as the Walters Art Museum, Babe Ruth’s Birthplace, and Museum, Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute, and the Mt. Vernon cultural district.
Visiting these sites will give you a thrill you can enjoy and find memories that will last you a lifetime. Finding time to have a day trip can be hard but keep in mind that you and your family deserve time off and quality time together making those memories. These fantastic day trips are waiting for you to explore them, and while you’re in the area, visit Jim McKay Chevrolet to test drive one of our new vehicles in style!
