2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 or 2500HD in Fairfax, VA - Jim McKay Chevrolet

The 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2500HD models look fantastic and deliver outstanding performance at work and play. Either truck is an excellent choice for light to medium payload and trailering tasks. Chevy offers a dizzying variety of combinations of performance and trim packages, so it’s tough to compare one 1500 to another, much less the Silverado 1500 to the Silverado 2500HD. But there are some notable differences between the two.

2020 Chevy Silverado 1500

The Silverado 1500 is a light-duty half-ton pickup truck than it’s more muscular Silverado 2500HD sibling. The 2020 update to the Silverado 1500 includes mostly trim changes and safety features. The Silverado 1500 is designed with city and highway use in mind. It’s a lighter truck with a smoother suspension and a tighter turn radius.

Better Fuel Economy, Depending on Engine Choice

The 2020 Silverado 1500 offers engine choices ranging in power from a 3.0 liter inline-6 to a beefy 6.2 liter V-8. Silverado 1500 fuel economy depends on the engine/transmission pairing.

  • Best fuel economy (Duramax diesel, 10-speed transmission) 23 mpg city / 33 highway
  • Lowest fuel economy (4.3 L V-6, 6-speed transmission) 14 mpg city / 16 highway

Light Payload and Trailering

The 2020 Silverado 1500 has an adequate payload capacity of around 2100 pounds. The trailering ability depends on how the truck is packaged but can vary between 6,700 lbs on the low end and over 10,000 lbs on the high end.

Silverado 1500 Bottom Line

Choose the Chevy Silverado 1500 for light-duty and work commutes that do not require payloads over 2000lbs and trailering heavier than 10,000lbs.

Chevy Silverado 2500HD

The Silverado 2500HD is a medium-duty truck that has been completely overhauled in 2020. -With a tighter suspension and longer wheelbase, the Chevy Silverado 2500HD performs best at work and play in the field. The ride is built specifically to handle the bumps and dips of off-road conditions.

More Power, More Fuel

The optional 6.6 liter Duramax V-8 diesel engine has a massive 910 lbs-ft of torque and 440 horsepower. The gasoline V-8 engine is no slouch, coming in at 464 and 401, respectively. The fuel economy of this model suffers compared to the 1500 (around 20 mpg highway), of course, but the fuel tank is 10 gallons larger (36 total).

Heavier Payload and Trailering

The larger engines and beefier construction of the 2500HD make it a formidable hauler. Depending on the trim, the maximum payload of the Silverado 2500HD is as high as 3,900 lbs, and this beast can tow an impressive 15,400 lbs.

2500HD Bottom Line

If you have construction site payloads or trailering needs approaching a medium-sized fifth wheel, then this is the better option for you by far.
