Chevy EV Care Tips in Fairfax, VA - Jim McKay Chevrolet

Like any road vehicle, your EV needs certain maintenance procedures to keep running smoothly. If you’re a new EV owner, you’ll primarily need to learn about proper battery pack care. After that, many of the routine services are the same as with a traditional car. The following are a few key Chevy EV maintenance tips, most of which you can have carried out at your local Chevy dealer.

Don’t Stress the Battery With Fast-Charging

The battery that serves as your EV’s motor will deteriorate more rapidly if you use fast-charging stations. When possible, it’s wise to plan ahead so you rarely need to charge in a hurry. Then stick to gentler 120 or 240-volt charging whenever possible.

Keep the Battery Charged Between 20 and 80 Percent

EV batteries also last longer when they’re not depleted and left empty, which tends to shrink their overall capacity. Try to keep your battery charge above 20 percent at all times (again, planning your trips in advance can help with this).

Similarly, avoid fully charging your battery, which also causes premature wear. Always keep it under 80 percent of a full charge. Your EV may have a charging limiter that helps you set this upper limit.

Avoid Exposure to Extreme Heat or Cold

Much like traditional car batteries, EV battery packs can be damaged by both intense heat and freezing temperatures. Bear this in mind when parking your car; avoid leaving it in direct sunlight on hot days, and try to keep it under cover overnight during winter.

Have Brake Parts Inspected and Replaced

It’s a good idea to schedule biannual brake inspections so you know when you’ll need to replace your brake pads. And if you notice signs of wear in your brakes, have them examined and repaired right away.

Refresh All Vehicle Fluids Frequently

Your EV’s battery motor has a cooling system that needs to be maintained. Depending on the type of system, this may involve flushing liquid coolant or refrigerant (check your owner’s manual for guidance on your model).
