Get out and enjoy yourselves this upcoming holiday season. more Go See “A Christmas Carol” Go back to the old days with the classic “A Christmas Carol” live at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. They will be ringing in the holiday season with this Charles Dickens classic December 6th through the 22nd.  Follow Ebenezer Scrooge as he travels through Christmas past, present, and future. There will be Christmas carols, special effects, and more. This is a definite must-see for the entire family. The price for admission is $20 per ticket. Attend the Holiday Ball On December 21st, you can swing by the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center for the 2019 Holiday Ball. Dance the night away with friends and take the opportunity to make some new ones. There will be dinner, dancing, and live entertainment from bands and DJs. No jeans allowed at this winter event. It will start at 8 p.m. and end at 2 a.m. so there is plenty of time for fun. Check out the Holiday Market During the first three weekends in December, head out to Del Ray Artisans Gallery for their 24th annual Holiday Market. Vendors will be selling handcrafted crafts and different arts, including glassworks, jewelry, paintings, and more. Why not get some of your last-minute holiday shopping done while supporting locals? The artists will vary depending on which weekend you choose to go, but there is definitely something for everyone. Admission to this event is free. Watch the Annual Holiday Boat Parade of Lights The annual Holiday Boat Parade of Lights is a great way to welcome the winter season. This amazing event takes place on December 7th at 5:30 p.m. this year. You can see dozens of boats completely decked out with holiday lights, as they cruise along the historical waterfront of the Potomac River. This is truly a sight to behold each year for visitors and locals alike. Additional activities will be available dockside for your enjoyment. Go See Collingwood Lights Collingwood Lights is a local neighborhood favorite during the holiday season. For the last 21 years, Bill Vaughan has decorated his home for everyone to enjoy and get in the holiday spirit. He has even been featured on national television for his annual displays, so this is a must-see this winter season. You can find videos of his previous displays online to check out before you go so you can get a taste of what to expect. You can find this amazing light feature at 1601 Collingwood Rd. The Corvette has kept the same iconic style for years without much change in design features. For the first time ever, you can find a big style change coming in 2020. Sleeker, stronger, and even more style can be found in the first hardtop Corvette Convertible. Here are five things to know before you shop. more How the Hardtop Works New design features allow the hardtop on the new Corvette Convertible to function seamlessly. The two-piece top will lift up and fold backward close to the rear engine. It stays stored beneath a tonneau cover in a weather-protected compartment. You can fold down the convertible top in just 16 seconds and can even do so while driving up to 30 miles per hour. Six different small, hydraulic motors are at work to handle this new Corvette top. Better than that is the fact that the top doesn't block any of your rear cargo space when retracted. The Styling Is Almost Futuristic When you look at the new Corvette convertible for the first time, you will notice some changes. In addition to the new top, you will see that the tonneau cover adds something like an aircraft feel to the car. The cover will come in either body color or Carbon Flash finish trim. The windows will be able to be operated independently of the top so you can customize your airflow. With the windows and top down the car looks extremely dramatic. There Is No Decrease in Performance The new top is estimated to add a little over 100 extra pounds to the overall weight of the Corvette. With this being said, there is not supposed to be any decrease in power or performance with this added feature. You can still expect the same 495 horsepower with the Z51 package. There Will Be a Slight Price Increase With the advanced technology and seriously stylish designs that the 2020 Corvette convertible will come with, you probably already know that the base price will be slightly different than with previous model years. Alexandria is a beautiful town full of wonder and history. From the first European settlement to the establishment of a significant port city, the town's history is far from short. Like every town though, Alexandria has some things that aren't always kept on the surface. Keep reading to find out six things you might not know about the history of Alexandria. more Alexandria Was a Supply Center During the Civil War In 1861, the town of Alexandria, Virginia, became a supply center for the Federal Army during the Civil War. Troops and various supplies were transported to the town through the port and the railroad and were then dispersed where they needed to be at the front lines. There were hospitals and medical buildings that housed wounded soldiers that were brought back to the city by train. This allowed the city to remain intact. It didn't sustain any major damage during the war like many of the other towns in the area. The Town Was a Thriving Trading Post In the 1700s, Alexandria was a very profitable town for crops of all kinds. Farmers grew crops such as hemp, tobacco, corn, and wheat. The community set up a trading and shipping port so that people could gather and exchange the crops they had grown for products they needed, in order to survive. This well-established port kept the economy booming and allowed the town's inhabitants to flourish. Alexandria Dates Back Thousands of Centuries The city of Alexandria is old, and in fact, dates back thousands of centuries. There have been several different Native American artifacts that date back as much as 13,200 years ago. The land used to be inhabited solely by Native American tribes from the Conoy chiefdom. As early as 1600 A.D., there were people using this prosperous land for hunting and fishing. The City is Full of Historical Sites Alexandria is home to many different historical sites and events. These places include the Historic District, Fairlington, Rosemont, the Town of Potomac, Parkfairfax, and the Uptown/Parker-Gray National Register Historic District. A visit to any of these sites is sure to result in a rich history lesson. The Alexandria Canal Was Important During the 1800s From 1843 to 1866, the Alexandria Canal was an important physical location for the economy of the town. The canal ran from its terminal in Georgetown and carried across the Potomac River and then ran down the Virginia shore. It eventually descended by three lift locks and barges. The canal system was seven miles long in its entirety. Turn of the Century As 1900 advanced upon the city, they saw more types of goods to trade, such as wheat, beer, leather, and fertilizer. As time went on, well-known people came to town, including Gerald Ford and President Woodrow Wilson. Gerald Ford moved to Alexandria in 1955 and lived there during his term as Vice President of the United States. Alexandria is a city rich in history, dating back hundreds and even thousands of years. Alexandria, Virginia, has an extensive history, along with a number of fascinating historic attractions. The city was originally settled in the mid-17th century, although more extensive development didn't take place until 1746. Over the centuries, some of the structures built in the early days of Alexandria have remained standing, allowing locals and visitors to experience the historical significance of the area. more George Washington's Mount Vernon George Washington, the nation's first president, adopted Alexandria as his hometown. About 8 miles south of Old Town, where many of the historic buildings are located, you'll find Mount Vernon. This estate is one of the most visited sites in the nation, showcasing the home of President Washington. You can explore the museum that includes exhibits with documents and artifacts that hold significance in the history of the country. The estate also includes grounds that have been meticulously preserved, offering a glimpse into what life was like in colonial America. Mount Vernon serves as President Washington's final resting place. Carlyle House Located on Fairfax Street in Old Town Alexandria, the Carlyle House is another popular attraction. It dates back to 1753 and showcases the Georgian architectural style. John Carlyle, the city's founder, built the house, which once served as the location for a meeting between General Braddock and five royal governors in which they discussed the funding for the French and Indian War. The Carlyle House is open every day but Monday and tours are offered on the hour and half-hour, with the final tour beginning at 4 p.m. Alexandria Black History Museum The historic structure that houses the Alexandria Black History Museum was once the library where African American residents had to go when the city was still segregated. The museum now houses a number of exhibits that showcase the culture and contributions of the city's black residents. The mission of this museum is to enrich the lives of visitors and locals, as well as stimulate appreciation of the diversity of the area. In mid-September, an exhibit will highlight the history of escaped slaves during the Civil War. This exhibit, titled “The Journey to be Free,” was featured in the museum in 2014 and is returning in honor of the fifth anniversary of the dedication of the Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery and Memorial dedication. Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum In 1792, a local family founded a business that combined manufacturing, wholesaling, and retailing. In 1805, the family-owned business moved to the location that is now the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Alexandria. It continued to operate there until 1933, making it one of the oldest continuously run businesses in the nation. Today, this museum features a collection of medical equipment, hand-blown glass pieces, and herbal botanicals. It also contains archived materials like formula and prescription books, invoices, orders, and journals from the business owners. Tours are available at a quarter-past and quarter-to the hour when the museum is open. The hours vary, depending on the season. When you tour these fascinating historic sites, you can learn more about the history of Alexandria, as well as the people who have made the city what it is today. Take a look at some of the aspects of an insurance policy that you should make sure you have on your car to avoid being financially responsible for damages after an accident. more Minimum Requirements Every state has its own minimum requirements for vehicle insurance coverage, so it's important to make sure you have least that much coverage within your policy. You can review the minimums, as well as lookup average rates based on zip codes, level of coverage, and age. Your state may also have unique laws that apply to auto insurance, so take a look at these requirements before you purchase a policy as well. Some of these laws include: Tort system, which means that someone is determined to be at fault in every accident. No-fault system, which eliminates finding fault in accidents. “No pay, no play” laws, which eliminate compensation for any damages that result from an accident for an uninsured driver. Liability Liability insurance covers you when you are liable for an accident or found to be at fault. States require all drivers to have liability coverage, but it may not be the best option to only have this type of coverage on your vehicle. If you get into an accident that you are liable for, your insurance policy will cover damages to the other involved party but will not pay for any damages to your vehicle. Liability coverage is split into bodily injury and property damage. Collision Collision coverage is similar to liability coverage, although it's more extensive. This type of insurance policy covers any collision, other than with an animal. It will pay for damage to both the other involved vehicle or vehicles and your vehicle after an accident. Collision insurance will kick in if you crash into another car or if you hit a tree, pothole, telephone pole, or another object. Although it's not necessarily required, it can offer an extra level of protection that you won't get if your policy only includes liability coverage. Comprehensive A comprehensive insurance policy also includes coverage for any situation other than an accident with another vehicle. Some examples include vandalism, theft, falling trees, weather damage, accidents involving animals, damage to the windshield or other glass, fire damage, and rocks or objects that fall off or are kicked up by other cars. A comprehensive policy will protect your vehicle in situations that are beyond your control. If you have a loan or lease on your vehicle, the lender may require you to have comprehensive coverage on the policy.
