The engine in your Chevrolet is the most complex system in your car. It uses the combustion process to create energy, which is then transmitted to your wheels via the transmission. An engine contains a huge variety of systems, and all of them must work together to allow the engine to function. Fuel enters the intake manifold through the fuel injectors, and air enters the manifold after it passes through the air filter. Once inside the manifold, the fuel and air mix in a precise ratio before they enter the cylinders. Once inside the cylinders, the fuel-air mixture is compressed and ignited by the spark plugs to create combustion. Most transmission problems are simple and easy for our Chevrolet dealer to repair if you catch them early. more Humming, Buzzing, and Whining Your transmission is designed to operate smoothly, efficiently, and quietly as it shifts gears according to the demands of the transmission computer. If you start to hear any sound coming from the transmission, this is a sign that something is going wrong. The first sound you'll usually hear is a very slight buzzing noise that might not be noticeable at first. If the noise isn't investigated, the buzzing will become louder and could graduate to annoying humming or high-pitched whining sounds. If you hear any sounds, we advise calling our service department ASAP so we can investigate. Once we've identified the source of the noise, we'll repair or replace the affected component. Transmission Leak It's never a good start to the day to see a pool of liquid underneath your car, particularly if the liquid is red and sweet-smelling. Red liquid leaking means you have a transmission fluid leak. This fluid is essential for your transmission, as it provides numerous transmission components with a friction-resistant coating. It also provides the hydraulic power essential for the transmission to shift gears. These are warning signs that your alternator is failing. As we've seen, an aging alternator produces less power. This is a gradual, downhill process as an alternator always produces more power than your car requires. When the alternator can't produce power for all your car's systems, your computer will assign the available power. The computer will shift power to components as needed. This can mean stopping one component, like the radio, and shifting its power to another component, like the headlights. These problems will become steadily worse as time passes. Once we replace your alternator, these problems will disappear. Dim and Bright Lights Your headlights have a constant luminescence. Headlights that start to go dim could be a sign that the bulbs are failing. If headlights then blaze brighter than they should, the problem is a worn alternator. The lack of power from a dying alternator shows in all the electrical systems. The headlights are a priority system, so your car's computer will always assign them enough power to switch on. When the lights become brighter than they should, this is a sign that the computer is assigning more power to compensate for the previous low supply.
