Fishing is one of the best ways to spend a relaxing afternoon, and there are few better places to do it than near Fairfax, VA. North Virginia’s lakes, rivers, and streams are full of wonderful fishing spots waiting to be discovered. So why not grab your rod and line and head out into the country to spend a day by the water at one of the spots on this list?

Burke Lake Park

One of the best places in the region to fish for bass, Burke Lake Park consistently produces the largest fish in North Virginia. It is a particularly good spot to fish from your boat, although only non-gasoline engines are allowed. You can also rent canoes, rowing boats, or boats with electric engines from the park itself, so if you don’t have a boat then don’t worry! Apart from bass, you can also find walleye, channel catfish, and channel muskellunge here.

Lake Fairfax

Located to the west of Fairfax, this lake is stocked annually with rainbow trout, making it a great place to practice your fly fishing skills. There are plenty of spots along the banks to fish from, and there are also numerous docks, and even a fishing pier to fish from. If you prefer to fish from a boat, be aware that both motorboats and sailboats are not allowed on the lake. There are also many miles of hiking trails to enjoy in the surrounding natural areas.

Prince William Forest Park

This national park is known for the beavers and river otters that call the 18 miles of stream it protects home. There is a good chance to see them along the 37 miles of hiking trails that snake through the park. As far as fishing is concerned, the streams themselves are full of catfish, bass, and crappie, and the two impoundments along the course of the streams are full of tranquil spots to cast your line.

Riverbend Park

This beautiful park is located along the majestic Potomac River and is an excellent place to fish for carp, bass, and catfish. The park offers plenty of equipment to rent, including rods, lines, and lures, and there is also a bait shop on site. You can even rent boats, making this park a great choice if you’re still new to fishing, and perhaps haven’t invested in a full set of equipment yet. You can also enjoy the miles of hiking trails, and the various cultural and wildlife exhibits at the visitors center.

Pohick Bay Regional Park

Largemouth bass, carp, and catfish are found year-round at this wonderful park situated just south of Fairfax, on the Gunston Cove tributary of the Potomac River. The park has plenty of boats to rent during the summer months and also features an impressive waterpark that the kids will love.
