Tire Service in Fairfax, VA - Jim McKay Chevrolet

Diligent drivers always keep a close eye on their tires. The last thing anyone wants is a blowout or skid while rushing to work. If you’re wondering if your car needs a set of new tires, consider the following warning signs. You can also ask a trusted technician at our Chevrolet dealership serving Fairfax, VA.

Shallow or Balding Treads

Car tires usually last about four to five years. If tires survive without suffering any significant damage, then eventually, their treads will wear down until the tires are bald.

When tread depths reach 2/32 of an inch, the tires may no longer be able to grip the road properly. It’s best to always replace tires before they pass 2/32 of an inch in depth. And during winter, when roads are icy, consider swapping out your tires long before the treads become so shallow.

Worsening Traction

Sometimes the treads of tires are still reasonably thick but, nonetheless, you sense a reduction in traction. This might be due to various factors, including carrying heavier loads, poor road conditions, or even a change in your driving habits.

Reduced traction might also be a problem with the tires. For your own reassurance, have one of our technicians take a look to determine whether your tires are still safe to use.

Consistently Low Air Pressure

It’s important for car tires to maintain the optimal level of air pressure as determined by the manufacturer. Both over-inflation and under-inflation are dangerous and can cause premature tire failure.

While checking your tire pressure each month, if you notice that a particular tire is consistently losing air, have it checked by a professional. The tire might have a hidden puncture, which would necessitate an immediate repair job or replacement.

Increased Vibrations and Noise

If you realize that the vibrations and road noise generated by your car have worsened considerably over time, your tires might be to blame. When tires wear down unevenly or develop other problems, it can heighten the roughness and noise while also reducing your level of handling and control. This puts you at risk on the road.

Visible Tire Damage

The most obvious indication that it’s time for replacements is visible damage to the tires. If you find a deep or lengthy cut, excessive cracks in the sidewalls, embedded objects, or bulges and blisters anywhere on the rubber, then the tire may need to go. Have a Jim McKay Chevrolet technician take a closer look to determine whether or not the damaged tire can be saved.
